Corcega apartment

Occupying the interior of one of the blocks in the Eixample, there are industrial warehouses with exposed brick walls and gently sloping roofs, which have been preserved as part of the city’s architectural heritage. These warehouses have been repurposed as offices. The spaces within these warehouses are unique and open-plan, each with a ground floor and a mezzanine. Natural light enters through the fully glazed facade and two small skylights in the roof. The recessed mezzanine floor relative to the facade allows for increased illumination of both floors. Access to the premises is via an interior street with controlled access from Calle Córcega, providing a degree of privacy to the spaces that open onto it.

The program for this project is to create a space for work and reflection. The goal of the intervention is to foster a relaxed atmosphere that inspires any activities conducted in the space. The program includes a toilet and an open kitchen-office on the ground floor, and a bathroom on the first floor. The remainder of the space is kept open to allow for flexible furniture arrangements as needed.

To achieve this, our intervention proposes an abstract allusion to the natural world. We aim to create a perception of the space as a small retreat into nature, which we believe is the ideal way to inspire creativity. The contrast between the hectic city environment, particularly in the Eixample, and the tranquility experienced upon entering the premises is central to the design. Features such as the double-height entrance space, which becomes an interior garden, and the back wall of the premises, which is adorned with uneven geometry created using painted wooden slats, along with the use of raw wood in the general furniture and kitchen units, contribute to evoking a natural setting. Additional accents of color in various objects further enhance this effect.

In this project, it is the sum of each of the small interventions that achieves the desired result. Each element plays a crucial role, and the objective would not be fully realized without any one of them.
