Fontanilles I House

Interior Design for a New Building in a Natural Setting and Integration with the Environment through Porches, Pergolas, and Garden Spaces

The residential program is primarily located on the ground floor and includes four bedrooms with their respective bathrooms, a large open-plan kitchen-dining area connected to the living room, a guest toilet, and an entryway.

The upper floor serves as a flexible space for various uses and includes a full bathroom. The lower floor is dedicated to a machinery room, laundry and ironing area, wine cellar, music room, study, and more.

The constructed volume, being of significant size, was designed to integrate seamlessly into the natural surroundings. The north façade, with few openings to the outside, greets visitors. The oak forest situated on a small hill provides initial protection for the access area. Despite this, we decided to create a courtyard before the building’s entrance, functioning as a vestibule; a space enclosed by walls that remains exposed. This volume also helped to organize the façade’s volumetry.

The south façade, much more open, connects with the landscape. An exterior covered space occupies the corner between the living room and the kitchen. This shaded area extends with a pergola along the entire front of the building and continues to form a living area. A fire pit marks the end of the perspective from the pergola, visible from the interior living room.

The impact of the construction on the rural environment is effectively mitigated by employing “structures” in the façades that facilitate the growth and extension of vegetation.
