Ramón y Cajal House

The project is a single-family house between party walls located in the Gràcia neighbourhood of Barcelona, built on a narrow and deep plot.

Due to planning restrictions, the house is developed over three floors, leaving the rear of the plot free as a garden.

The layout is organised around a staircase placed at the centre of the house, dividing it into two volumes: one facing the street and the other the inner courtyard. This arrangement makes the most of the available space and allows for a functional distribution of the rooms. The kitchen and bedrooms face the quieter, more private courtyard, while the living room and bathrooms open onto the street.

The design introduces a split-level configuration between the two volumes that eases internal circulation: each flight of stairs gives access to a different floor. As the element that articulates the various spaces, the staircase becomes the protagonist of the architectural proposal. Its central role is reinforced by a library that accompanies it along its entire course.

The outdoor spaces — the garden and the rooftop terrace — are an essential part of the programme of the house and are integrated with the interior through large openings.

The result is a green, private oasis in the very heart of the city.
