Hotel Casa Sagnier & Cafe del Arquitecto

The hotel is located in the same building that once housed the home and architectural studio of Enric Sagnier i Villavecchia. The interior design of the hotel reflects the mindset of the famous architect, who adapted to any commission by understanding the past, working in the present, and striving to transcend trends to remain relevant in the future. The result is a hotel open to the city, where comfortable environments and elegant design take precedence.

Known as “Casa Dolors Vidal de Sagnier” in honor of his wife, the building was constructed in 1892 as a family residence and studio for architect Enric Sagnier i Villavecchia, a legacy that is reflected in the current boutique hotel, Casa Sagnier. The rooms evoke a home where rest, work, and social gatherings coexist.

The building is located in Barcelona, at the corner of Rambla Catalunya and Passatge de la Concepció, one of the most iconic spots in the Eixample district. After many years of use as a residential complex, the building was converted into a hotel in 2008 and restored in 2021 to recover its original character, resulting in the current Hotel Casa Sagnier, where understated luxury is the main focus.

The architecture and design studio Turull-Sørensen took on the project commissioned by the Pérez-Sala family to create a distinguished, elegant, and tranquil hotel that embodies the best values of the city and pays homage to Sagnier himself, with direct nods to his profession and approach.

The design challenge centered on interpreting a blend of eras: looking to the past, studying and understanding all the historical links of the building with its spatial and temporal context, as well as with Sagnier himself; staying in the present, designing for a real audience; and looking to the future, constructing in a way that the new hotel can endure and thrive over the years.

In the words of architect Federico Turull, who led the renovation: “It wasn’t about imitating what Sagnier would have done 100 years ago, but about approaching it with his mindset—that of a creator who interacts with the different eras he has lived through. The building lives and will continue to live, without trying to adhere to a strict and defined style, but rather moving with the times.”
